Acoustic-electric Guitars
These new hybrids are in a constant state of evolutionseveral dozen have been built so far over the last three years.
The are essentially an acoustic Dreadnaught body married to a 24-fret electric guitar neck that has a magnetic pickup suspended into the sound hole.
A second piezzo leaf-pickup inside the body is also available, requiring a three-way selector switch.
Volume and tone pots are incorporated internally into the upper bout and are adjusted through external knobs.
A jack plug is installed into the tail block.
Neck-mounted pickups are easily exchanged and adjusted in all three axes.
Strings are grounded in earlier models through a brass nut contacting a laminated copper strip underneath the fingerboardlater models through a conductive carbon-fibre saddle.
Aside from the internally mounted hardware, the body construction is purely acoustic.
The sound of these instruments is simply amazing.
Again, the rock maple necks maximize sustain and accentuate long singing trebles.
The flavour of the tone depends on the body woods and proportionsgoing from a deep Dreadnaught boom to strident solo articulation.
The magnetic pickup creates a big, juicy tone covering the entire gamut of electric guitar sounds; is totally feedback free and interfaces with all the electric guitar accessories.
The onboard piezzo tends to give a balder and "woodier" sound, and is particularly effective when mixed with the magnetic signal.
The tonal possibilities of these hybrids are, quite literally, infinite.
Acoustic-Electric Dreadnaught Performance - 7 string
Prop. Wolf Kater
|
This guitar is obviously the "bigger brother" of the A/E Performance 6 string, being made literally part for part from the same planks.
A true matched set.
The neck and bridge were widened to aaccommodatethe extra bass string.
The result is amazing; the extra string essentially acts as an open drone or pedal giving a deep rich hue to the sound.
The bass string's real purpose is to provide the bottom C in open G tuning, missing on a regular 6 string when in open G.
Although the .058" diam string can be dropped to a low AA or GG as well, when pulled up to D to become a unison with the bottom D in open D or DADGAD, the effect is absolutely stunning
a deep, rich bass pedal effect that is truly unique and hypnotizing in a performance situation.
This is the ultimate open-tuning guitar.
